Although there were few salmon caught the sea-trout have been giving us some good sport in both during the day and the evenings.

Week 22 Tim Brentwood landed a lively sea trout from Browns Hole and his son Sam, fished hard into the night and was rewarded with his first Dee Sea-trout, the evenings can be a magical time and well worth going out.

The water came up to 3'5" and colored which slowed things down for us, although we did see fish in the first pool in the Tanar-burn hiding from the torrent of water coming down stream. We couldn't get at them very easily so Sam and I took the saw out and cleared a stretch. We unfortunately didn't manage to get one this time, but I know where I will be looking next time we have a good spate!
Needless to say they had gone by the following day.

Richard Eeley landed a grilse of 5lb from Tanarmouth for the Craigendinnie rods, but it was the sea-trout which gave the sport. A total of 6 Sea-trout and a Salmon for the week, disappointing but enjoyable. Hopefully the salmon will arrive with the extra water.

Week 23 was unfortunately yet another tough week but the party was great fun. The water was a little colored all week which didn't bode well, its strange to me that the Dee salmon definitely don't like the colored water whereas in most Scottish rivers it is the norm.

We had showers all week but nothing to rise the water dramatically until Saturday, Nick Spaven broke our duck on Thursday with a cracking 10lb'r from Tanarmouth, and Jane Spaven followed this up with a sea-trout from the Lorne. On Friday we had a little action in Symonds no hook up but some great boils and follows to the hitch fly, fishing the hitch is something that always gets my adrenalin going!

We christened the new Craigendinnie hut with an evening of Johnathan's famous paella, cold white wine and great company!

On Friday night it rained hard and by Saturday the river was big and colored, despite the tough conditions, Jane winkled out a sea-trout from Tanarmouth with her new found speycasting skills, and the Craigendinnie rods had some great sport catching 3 from Jockie Fyfe.

On Saturday evening Chris caught a 3lb grilse and and 8lb salmon, again from Tanarmouth. Another tough fishing week but everyone was great company and we had some sport toward the end.

It seems Tanarmouth is starting to produce fish on the lower beat, I'm hopeful it will start filling up with a few residents. Again, this time of year the evenings are fishing well and worth the effort to go out.

With a little luck Saturdays spate brought some fish through to us and they will start holding.

As ever, I am optimistic for next week!
It seems Glen Shee caught the edge of the rain in Perth and the river came up on Monday which continued to rise through Tuesday. The fish that had been in our beat appeared to have moved on and we struggled to make any contact for most of the week. The Craigendinnie rods managed to keep our numbers up with two fish caught in Tanar Mouth on the Friday. A 16lb'r and a 14lb'r which was well deserved in a tough week.

On the plus side we did make contact with a lot of smoults which seem to be in healthy numbers, lets hope that's a positive sign for the future.

Nonetheless an enjoyable week and the sea trout numbers seem to be rising down river so we may be in for some evening sport in next week/

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15831084575028345020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1311506542263515527.post-30162088062322681812014-05-28T15:49:00.001-07:002014-05-28T15:50:01.818-07:00Week 20, Top Dogs again!Last week was another productive week for Aboyne Castle rods.

Low water, bright conditions weren't enough to stop this weeks rod's catching, we had not seen many fish showing all week but were averaging 2 a day!

The Norman party took Waterside & Ferrar and Aboyne Castle for the week, a great party with lots of laughs! Monday started fish less for us and we didn't see a lot which didn't bode well.

However by Tuesday Harvey got us off the mark with a 4lb fresh grilse from Upper Plantation, and Alex landed a nice sea trout from the Lorne, I'm excited to see if the sea trout will arrive in some numbers this year! I have been hard at the vice with some sea trout killers!

Peter Wheelhouse and George had two from crofts on the Tuesday for the Craigendinnie rods, so I was keen to get back to the upper beat.

On Wednesday I had the first view of my beat which I hope to see many more of during the season. As I looked up Crofts on a beautiful day, with the hills in the background and both of my rods playing a fish! There's no better feeling as a Ghillie!

Thursday we continued the success with Mike Stevens landing the first fish of the season from Lower Fontie and Richard breaking his duck with a cracking 16lb'r from Tanarmouth!

Friday and Saturday we continued to land fish from Jockie Fyfe, Jim Norman landed a nice 6lbr from Crofts and another for Micheal Trafford from the Lorne of the Saturday.

A successful week, and Aboyne Castle rods were yet again top on the river!

Lets hope next week we can keep it up. The water has been dropping steadily and i'm sure a little rise soon won't go amiss. Next week has forecast showers and easterlies which isn't ideal but I as ever remain optimistic!

The water height on Monday was 1"5' and due to fall all week, so after last weeks rise and no rain forecast I was sure this week we were going to see salmon in some numbers.
Nick Marriner and Andrew Robertson who have both fished here for over 30 years were my rods for the beginning of the week, I had Nick two weeks before who spurred me on to open up the New Pool so I was keen to learn some more of his secret spots!

Monday started pretty average, we were seeing a few fish in Crofts and Symonds but couldnt seem to induce a take, wee doubles and floating lines were the choice, that failing we tried a sink tip etc but to no avail. Nonetheless it was encouraging to see a few more fish about and we were optimistic!
On Tuesday we were out of it a little on the lower beat, whilst George and his rods on Craigendinnie had a cracking morning with two fish landed from Crofts and one lost from Jockie Fyfe.
We had touched one in the Lorne but all seemed a little quiet on the bottom beat until 5:00pm when Andrew managed to winkle one out of the Lorne. A fish of about 4lb's.

So with the duck broken we were eager for Wednesday to start with the water at 1"2'; 50F (perfect) and us back among the fish!

Andrew started off the morning with a flying start, 3 fish from Crofts on the first run down!! A real mixed bag with a sea liced Grilse, a Fresh 6 lb salmon and a slightly coloured 7lb'r. There had obviously been a movement of fish from the middle river. Nick in the afternoon landed a spanking fresh 10lb spirnger from Symonds! The phone rings and George has a salmon and sea trout to book in for Aboyne Castle bank from Browns Hole.

This was Andrew's last day and one of the best mornings he has had on this beat in a few years so a great way to finish the 3 day trip! Nick Still had a day to bring the Tally up, which he proceeded to do in style!

Thursday morning, Nick landed a 6lb'r from the Lorne before heading up to Plantation, he has caught the first fish of the season from plantation for 3 years on the trot and wasn't going to let us down this year, by the time lunch time had arrived he had two fish from the tail of Upper Plantation!

Before leaving on the Friday he called with yet another to book in from Crofts the evening before! Actively following Fishpal with Crathes not far behind, our two rod beat was in the lead! Something I must admit I wasn't expecting to happen in my first season.

All good things must come to an end as the old adage goes, and it seemed by Friday the fish had moved on through and things went very quiet. A real shame for Tom and his Micheal who fished for the last 3 days but hopefully next year they will be among the fish aswell.

It seems the Upper Dee is starting to perform a little better now, I'm sure not like many of you will remember from the good old days, but for a young green Ghillie to the Dee like me it is certainly nice to get my net wet a little more.

It seems floating lines and wee black doubles are doing the trick, size 12 - 14. and the evenings are definitely worth a cast!

I am hopeful for next week and confident that if they are there we will catch a few!

Not many pictures this week so just a couple of wildlife shots.
Yesterday and today saw Aboyne Castle as the top beat on the Dee!! The fish seem to be here in a few numbers now! I hope they are going to stay around for a while. For just a two rod beat I must admit I'm chuffed to bits and very proud of my rods!
Eric Wardle (Craigendinnie rod) landed a 6lb fish from Tanarmouth on the Monday. Unfortunately the river rose and things went a little quiet on the beat, fish were reported up stream but seemed to keep their heads down.
Wednesday morning, the river was up and coloured, Richard landed a 7lb'r from Symonds on a Park Shrimp Conehead with a sink tip, followed by his father David who lost another. By Thursday we were at 1"9' and falling, another fish from Symonds was caught by Richard Franklin who had just joined the party a beauty 10lb fresh springer from Symonds, Craigendinie bank.
This week was testing to say the least with the water up and down, which kept the fish moving on through, Richard managed to move a fish in the New Pool which has now been opened up as a high water pool, and lost another in Lower Fontie. Craigendinnie rod Robert Hall Jones caught another fish from Symonds in the evening.
This week saw the first fish from Symonds on the Aboyne Castle bank, and I'm sure the first of many!
A thoroughly enjoyable week with lots of laughs and some exploring new waters, despite the unfortunate rise which pushed fish down the perseverance payed off with 4 on the bank and others lost.

I am very optimistic for next week, with no rain forecast the river should be dropping nicely, and fish moving upriver watch this space!
The river height started relatively high at 1'9" on the gauge, dropping nicely, with a small rise on Wednesday due to rain and melt then continuing to drop throughout the week.

We Landed 5 fish in total between the Craigendinnie and Aboyne castle banks. A much better week than what we have been having, the majority of fish were caught on floating lines with sink tips and Monkey flies. Although as the water temperature pushed up to 50F we were trying smaller doubles and floating lines as well.

Karlheinz landed the first fish this season of about 8lb's from Tanarmouth, (about time!) which took quite a large monkey on a hover intermediate with a slow sink tip. Jense had a nice 6lb'r from crofts, AC bank.

Craigendinnie rods landed one from the Lorne pool AC bank and two from crofts, one was a beauty of 18lbs!! All of the fish on crofts were caught well down the pool at the fence and below, they seem to like it down there at the moment!

So a much better week than previous but they still seem to be a little tricky to catch. With mild temperatures and only showers next week, I'm hoping we will start getting some residents building up in the pools. We will be moving on to floating lines and doubles now with water temperatures rising, although worth keeping some sink tips or intermediate lines handy. Keep ringing the changes.

Here are a few pics taken during the week.
That's a few fish caught down there now, I'm told usually the upper part is better but at the moment it seems to be producing the odd fish, which in tough times is well received. Mark lost what would have been Tanar Mouth's first fish of the season on the Monday evening

Peter Jensen fishing the Craigendinnie rod had one from Jockie Fyfe on Monday evening and a cracker from Symonds on the Tuesday, both Craigendinnie bank.

So with high spirits and a little relief I thought we would start catching some numbers and that the fish were starting to arrive in some numbers.

Wednesday we had a spate, the water rose and we saw very little for the rest of the week, a little disappointing!

Nonetheless it was a most enjoyable week, making the most of Craigendinnies new hut. I must admit it was nice for me to talk to the likes of Tom Wheelwright and Nick Marriner who have fished here for over 25 years, great to hear their experience of the beat!

Staying ever optimistic, they will arrive in numbers any day now!

P.s apologies the blog is a little behind, on the plus side the new pool is now opened up from the Aboyne Castle bank after Nick said it used to produce fish between 2" and 2"6'. Would be nice to have another higher water pool on the lower beat!

Not to many pictures from this week however Richard Illingworth and I did a little photo shoot of his very well behaved bonnie black lab, I'm sure he wont mind me sharing a couple of action shots.

Another tough week, the water has been at an ideal height all week between 1'5" dropping to 1", although the sun was shining hard all week at times feeling like the height of summer. Plenty of fish were still being caught in the middle river but didn't seem to be moving up in any numbers. Steve and Ola worked hard for the first part of the week with no avail unfortunately however there were some most enjoyable lunches in the sun!
Brian and Sian took over for the second half, Sian's first time fly fishing who picked the casting up very quickly and by the end of the week was casting like a pro!! Again the fish were elusive but i'm confident they should start arriving in numbers any day now!
Frustrating, but Perserverance payed off for Ross Wheeler who landed his first ever Salmon on the fly! From jockie Fyfe Craigendinnie bank. A great result and a cracking 12lb sealicer!
A good end to the week and to march, having hit our 5 year average lets hope for some more fish to move up and start holding up in the beat.

Next week has given milder weather and westerly winds, will be nice to see the end to those easterly's!

Picture doesn't do it justice. 12lb on the scales.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15831084575028345020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1311506542263515527.post-5002227141237476832014-03-29T11:43:00.001-07:002014-03-29T11:43:54.960-07:00Week 13
With a stable river at around 1'6" for most of the week every pool is fishing now! This week was a party which took Commonty, Banchory, aboyne castle and Craigendinnie. 2 fish were landed for AC and Craigendinnie beats, one from crofts on George's bank and the first fish from the Lorne AC bank. There is a gravel build up at the top of the Lorne this year so let's see if it starts producing a few more fish. Another good fish was lost from Symonds. Monkeys did the trick with float and sink tip lines. And most fish seem to be getting caught in the afternoons or evenings. We are at the 5 year average now so another on Monday would do nicely!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15831084575028345020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1311506542263515527.post-58086746014786937622014-03-20T01:13:00.001-07:002014-03-20T09:13:48.742-07:00Short Film - ABOYNE CASTLE SPRING 2014

With rising and falling water we didn't see too many fish, the water dropped away nicely Wednesday and Thursday resulting in Tony landing a nice 7lbr, but with mild temperatures and high winds it was soon back up! A very well deserved fish for Tony, adding it to the craigendinnie numbers.
Let's hope the river settles a bit for next week!

Here's a few pics, who says fishing in March is always cold and wet!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15831084575028345020noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1311506542263515527.post-25248514707755057492014-03-10T00:33:00.001-07:002014-03-10T00:43:06.061-07:00First week....With the warm temperatures and high waters through February we were all very optimistic for the first week! George started opening day with a cracking springer from the craigendinnie bank in Jockie Fyfe for his guests, although the remainder of the week seemed to be pretty slow. By Thursday a few fish seemed to be moving about with another fish being landed from Rail End, Waterside, and Deecastle all landing fish. Friday aboyne castle landed the first springer of the season! Caught by Alex Coutts, we knew he would winkle one out! The water has come up again on Sunday so I'm very hopefull for this coming week! There are still plenty of fish in the middle dee with reports of long tail seas liced fish being caught as high as Commonty! These fish are moving up quick!!

The foundations are in for Craigendinnie's new hut!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15831084575028345020noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1311506542263515527.post-37197971306734385152014-02-25T05:26:00.001-08:002014-02-25T11:15:33.953-08:00Some flies for the spring!

Its not fishing related I know, but that is what Sundays are for.

The sun was shining, fresh snow covered the hills and I was all hyped up to visit Glen Shee for a days skiing, until I discovered it is half term and there is a 3 mile traffic jam queuing up the mountain! So with visions of fresh powder and mountain tops fading I'm thinking what else can I do around here?

I found out after a quick phone call that Loch Micke has a nice walk around it and only a 20 minute drive so off I head, not really dressed for it in only jeans wellies and a jacket I arrive and WOW!

It was truly breathtaking scenery, so I enjoyed a nice Sunday stroll / slide (as all of the paths were now solid ice) around the loch.

If anyone is stuck wondering what to do on a Sunday or you wish to extend your fishing trip I would recommend it to you!

I will be updating the blog with hopefully lots of catches, river heights, whats catching and generally all things fishy from the beat!
Alec (aka the oracle) has been kind enough to walk the banks and let me know his secret spots! Its stunning water and i'm really looking forward to getting well acquainted with it this season!
After a mild winter there are plenty of fish being caught in the middle Dee so will soon be with us! Lets hope for a cracking season!

In the meantime, here's some pre-season pics.

A River too far?

Fiordland National Park set in the south-west of the South Island New Zealand has no shortage of water, turquoise green rivers set a midst temperate rain forest playing host to wild brown and rainbow trout.

Trout; a humble fisherman from the UK can only dream of!

We had been exploring different rivers for the past 3 months and now was time for the Jose!

Having heard lots about the river Jose, a secluded back country river known for its remoteness, lack of angling pressure and only accessible by helicopter set in the heart of Milford. A river at the top of every ones must fish list! Luke, a fellow avid fisherman we met on a prior trip to the Clinton, who has been living with us in Te Anau for the past 3 weeks, Richard and myself took to the map and planned our route.

Some was left to chance, we had booked a boat to 'Sandfly Point', the end of the famous Milford Trek, looking at the map we knew we could hike the 6 miles along the track which would bring us to the Arther river, the rest would be wading (possibly swimming) and jungle bashing to the Jose which flows from a distant valley to the north west into the 'dead lake'.

Milford Sound Sandfly Point

All we knew was that we had 3 days off work! Armed with rods, map, camping equipment and the determination to to anything to get there!!

After a 2 hour drive and a short boat trip we hike around 5 miles along the trek passing tired hikers along the way reaching the end of their 4 day trip. We however are still buzzing with excitement at the start of ours! With a skip in our step and big smiles we race on.

One of the reasons it is difficult to access, is due to having to cross the Arther River which, running into Milford Sound (in the top 10 wettest places in the world) can rise and fall by up to 20 ft in a day with ease. We however timed it right and during one of the driest summers NZ has ever had and no rain for 7 weeks we could cross easily. (Needless to say we would have swam across if things had been different.)

The Jose runs into lake Aida which is a lake suspended in the mountains high above the sea. A truly remarkable place which has an eerie look about it with hundreds of dead tree's standing out of the water from past floods.

The scenery is breathtaking, lush green beech rain forest oozing with lichen just proves how remote, untouched and pure this area of the world really is. Mountains burst from the sea in the 'Sound' and continue up the valley as far as ones eyes can see, I gazed in awe through the light clouds starting to clear at one of the mountain tops with a prominent scar running through the bedrock, I found out later that it was in fact one of the many fault lines where tectonic plates meet, showing the immense power of mother nature and this special place.

Something this trip offered was a chance to do a little lake fishing which is something I haven't done much of here in NZ. To be honest we can all fish lakes in the UK and stripping lures or twitching nymphs isn't what New Zealand fishing is about, however when you can see a cruising 4lb+ wild brown trout which you can stalk up to and even see its mouth open and close around your nymph or witness the slow motion rise as it breaks the surface, well yes that certainly is worth doing!!

We had marched past many weary hikers almost at a slow jog when we reached a cliff face and an opening in the valley, we knew this was near to where we were supposed to cross the Arther. The view was immense, and even from our elevated position around 90ft above the river we were already spotting large cruising brown trout!
Lush green mountains soared high above our heads, the crystal clear river Arther gently flowed beneath our feet, the eerieLake Aida to to the west, the thick bush we knew we would have to fight through lay between us and the Jose Valley and the whitest of white sandy plain.....We all knew this sight would haunt our dreams and would have to return someday!!!

"WOW" was all that needed to be said. we took it all in for a moment, let some hikers pass us by, and raced on down the track towards the river like three school boys.

We climbed through a small opening in the forest, stepped into the open plain and set up our rods. Richard had already spotted a cruising brown! We quickly put on our buffs and jungle formula as the sandflies had found us which was getting painful!

First cast to the brown on a small still water / back eddie from the Arther resulted in the first fish on the bank a lovely 4lb brown.

The low water left an amazing beach to the lake high in the mountains and we walked around stalking the margins and casting to trout. I had found the 'big boys' we had spotted from the cliff but with no cover and having to approach them from slightly upstream I took to my belly, crawled to the waters edge and began trying to haul the 30 yard cast from the floor to where I had seen them. Passers by must have wondered what the hell I was doing and the usual suspects proceeded to take lots of pictures. Unfortunately the trout made for their lie and disappeared from sight.

We fished on and saw little else; but as we reached the bottom of the Jose where it met Lake Aida 'the dead lake' we immediately started seeing fish! I cast to the first with a large Irresistible Adams, it swung out and took hard skipping across the pool, around a dead tree stump, leaving me jumping and skipping around rod high in the air trying to free the line, finesse was out of the window but managed to land another nice 4lb brown. Rich cast to the next and landed it and Luke the 4th and 4 fish on the bank!! Well chuffed we headed up, the river had a good head of fish and the lack of angling pressure meant they would quite happily come to a bushy looking fly cast to them.

Visibility wasn't great with the wind howling up the valley upstream leaving a ripple on the water to try and spot through; but after around half a mile we had 6 fish released and more lost and snapped!
Here though, the Jose goes very deep and slow moving for a mile or so, making wading up the river impossible so we had the most horrendous hour of jungle bashing I have had since I have been here, every time we hit a little opening we would come to a block of thick bush with jungle vines that would rip through your flesh and tangle around anything it could find!

'This is why it is a heli fishing destination only' I said to the lads. We persevered; tired and bleeding eventually made it through!

As soon as we did Rich had hooked and been snapped on the strike by a good brown and so the fishing continued!!

We fished on chuffed to bits that we had made it and continued up river. It split and opened into two small lakes, Luke went left, Rich and I straight up, the wind had got up and visibility was really poor on the lakes, Luke lost another good fish but Rich and I struggled to spot any.
The river now took a true back country style, small, shallow meandering through the valley. Rich lost another and the three of us walked upstream in single file. I was at the back when a lone brown swam downstream, three of us froze as if we had seen a ghost. As it approached me I unhooked my flies from the rod ring, slowly took off line and cast a blowfly downstream of it, not thinking for one minute that it would take as it must have seen all three of us. To our amazement it slowed, then stopped under it, and in slow motion gently sucked the fly from the surface film! With a strike a splash and the singing of the reel it was on!!
Darting around the pool another lovely 4lb brown!

This really is a little piece of heaven!!

I had been told by a very experienced guide here that when the river gets bouldery it is lovely water but there are no fish, just as he said we reached the gorge, made our way up a few pools and not a fish insight. We headed back down and set up camp.

Amidst all of this excitement I haven't mentioned just how bad the sandflies were!! Swarms of them biting hard and not letting up made the trip almost unbearable! Not for the faint hearted I can assure you! We decided as we couldn't eat or drink without ingesting countless flies we fished until almost dark. They eased as the darkness fell we could finally enjoy our feed!

Sausages, smash and gravy may sound fairly simple but after our day of excitement and in true wilderness miles away from anywhere it was a little bit of luxury and we three, felt like kings!

Morning broke. We were awakened by a helicopter which sounded like it was descending on the tent, one of the most surreal moments of my life, here we are after a days hike and severe jungle bashing in the middle of nowhere and a chopper decides to use our campsite as a landing site. I investigated, to find mink trappers being dropped off to set a new line of traps. They asked how we got here and after I explained they chuckled and said that there is a small trapping line through the bush which would take us back to the track!

We bid farewell, Luke and I headed for the small lakes downstream leaving Rich in bed. It was flat calm, perfect spotting conditions and Luke quickly had one on the bank. I was trying dries but they weren't interested this morning. I tried suspending a nymph below a Parachute Adams in the line of a cruising fish, it came up to take the nymph and darted off as I struck into it, as it did another trout took the parachute! Now trying to play two good browns on 6lb fluro my chances didn't bode well. They swam in opposite directions and snapped my line! Gutted!!

I had another two on the bank that morning and Luke two himself, as we arrived at camp Rich told us of his exploring down a tiny creek running off the Jose where he landed 3 and lost another three!! A great start to day two and 7 fish released!

We decided to explore the Arther river further into the Milford track and took the trappers advise to follow the trap line, the jungle bashing was much easier and we were soon back on the track. We explored the Arther upstream, these were more spooky and much fewer of them, we had only landed one when we found our next camping spot. We ditched the bags and having learnt that its best to fish until dark and then eat we set up camp and explored further! I cast to a fish we thought could have been 10lb but to no avail then Rich tried from the other bank again without a take. Slightly frustrated we continued up.

The evening got better and we each had another fish, on our way back to camp we spent some time casting to feeding big browns from one of the suspension bridges of the Milford Track, Luke almost had one which shy'dat the last second and I lost one after connecting!!

Seven before breakfast and only 4 for the rest of the day, although you didn't here us complaining!!
We set a monster fire, warmed ourselves, fed our bellies, laughed and joked about our trip over a bottle of cider!

We woke to rain and mist, and decided to head back, we hiked the 9 miles back, stopped to jump of a waterfall as we were seriously smelly campers by now and caught the ferry back to Milford, a quick mocchachino and cake in the cafe was a real treat and we headed home never to forget this trip of a lifetime!!
